Finding Somewhere to Live
If you're looking for somewhere to live, we provide the following information to assist you in finding accommodation.
Looking for a Room or a Flat to Rent ?
Try the Wednesday and Saturday Otago Daily Times. You can read the paper for free at the Dunedin Public Library or at the ODT office in Lower Stuart Street.

Check the community notice boards at the supermarkets.

If you have access to a computer try Trademe Flats and Houses. At Signpost (115 Lower Stuart St) you can look at Trademe (www.trademe.co.nz) on line for free.

If you think that Supported Accommodation of some sort is what you need then you need to talk to a Needs Assessor. Talk to Miramare 474 5552 or to a Community Mental Health Team worker. The Signpost website has links to most of the Dunedin supported accommodation providers.

See a Real Estate agent. Most of these people charge 1 weeks rent + GST as a letting fee, 2 weeks rent in advance and 2 weeks rent as bond. If you are on a benefit then WINZ will usually advance the rent and bond.

Supported Accommodation
Some people recover better if the place where they are living has some mental health staff available to support them. The options range from single bedroom flats with a landlord who is paid to check on your wellbeing once a week, through to hostels with 24 hour nursing staff. To get into any of these places requires a Needs Assessment which can be arranged through your community mental health worker or through Miramare .

Try ringing Miramare on 474 5552 and tell them you need somewhere supportive to live and would like a needs assessment.

When living in supported accommodation you can expect:
  • Your own bedroom.
  • The choice of paying board or having your benefit (if you are on one) paid to the organization. In that case Winz will pay you a personal allowance and the organization will provide food, power, phone etc. The details vary for different organizations.
  • Staff who treat the place as your home rather than primarily their workplace.
  • Some choice of who you live with.
  • Support with keeping well and planning your life.

Here are some of the options:

  • Carroll Street Trust
Carroll Street Trust has 27 beds in hostel accommodation. Staffing levels vary but can be up to 24 hours a day. This trust also has a range of flats and houses in the South Dunedin area with staffing for some of the day. Contact them on 477 3107 for more information.

  • Corstorphine Baptist Community Trust
This sounds like a church group but it’s not. They have about 40 beds in various houses in the South Dunedin and Mornington. Most of these are called “shared flatting” which means that groups of 3 to 5 people flat together in a house with some regular staff support during the day. Contact them on 4878707 or have a look at their website http://www.cbct.org.nz

  • Forbury House
This is a 6 bedroom house in Forbury Road. Staff are there for some hours each day.Their phone number is 455 8187.

  • Koputai Lodge
This is a rambling 8 bedroom house/hostel in Port Chalmers, very handy to the main street. Five beds are for permanent tenants and the other 3 are used for respite. That means that some people come to stay for short periods, a few days at a time. You can talk to them at 472 7027.

  • Hulme House
This is a big old 15 bed house in the lower part of High Street. It has 24 hour nursing staff and is run by the hospital. Phone is 477 1883.

  • Otago Accommodation Trust
Also known as the OAT Flats. There are 39 beds in 1 and 2 bedroom flats in central Dunedin and George Street. There are no on-site staff but the manager will check each flat on a regular unobtrusive basis to make sure you are OK. Phone Bill Riley on 473 9435.

  • PACT Group
PACT has a wide range of accommodation of all levels throughout Dunedin and also has houses in Balclutha and Oamaru. It is best to check their website http://www.pactgroup.co.nz/pact_otago.html for the latest information.
    Of particular interest might be:
Forbury Road 13 beds in 1, 2, or 3 bedroom flats for women and children.
Musselburgh Rise 13 beds in flats and a house, 24 hour staffing.

  • St. Clair Park
This is a rest home in Middleton Road, Corstorphine which has 8 mental health beds and 24 hour staffing. Enquiries to the manager on 487 7717.

QUOTATIONS for health

We had many inspiring responses to our request for healthy quotes. Our top choice and winner of the $25 book voucher was this anonymous gem from Robyn McMillan:

"It's the little things that annoy us. We can sit on top of a mountain but we can't sit on top of a tack."

Spring has sprung!

Did you know that people born in winter or spring are slightly more likely to develop bipolar disorder?
